I managed to do that and got those drivers (version 8.561.0.0 dated 1.12.2008) installed and working on Windows 8 and now ATI mobility radeon X1600 works like a charm in Windows 8 too (like it does with Windows 7). So, why Windows 8 install / windows update -service don't offer that same ATI mobility radeon driver for Windows 8 on laptop with that ati mobility radeon x1600 or why doesn't it recognize ati mobility radeon x1600 on that hp-laptop, thus the driver works with it? That works for Windows 7 installation / from windows update -service and that same driver seems to work perfect in Windows 8 too, like it does with Windows 7.

Then in search field, in upright, search 'mobility radeon x1600' and you'll find those driver-packages that Microsoft Update -service offers. Ok! I think the problem is in driver you have installed on windows 8.1 Try to remove it and install 'Microsoft Basic Display Adapter' driver and then try to upgrade Win 8.1 to Win 10. When doing verification will not be able to establish that it is a driver that is not compatible with Windows 10.
If it's the PCIe version, then depending on what you can afford you could always just get a new GPU. Even if your PSU lacks PCIe power connector cords, & you're limited to getting a GTX 1050, that's still a huge 19-tier jump ( & gives you a GPU capable of handling DirectX 12 (assuming your OS can handle it). They run about $105-135 USD at my local Micro Center (with most having a $10-20USD mail-in rebate). If that's a bit much, they also have Radeon HD 5450/6450 or GT 710 to 730 models, which will go up to DirectX 11 & have at least twice the VRAM of your current GPU, for $60 USD or less. I'm pretty sure I have the PCI version. I can take a look in my local tech store tough. Really grateful for all your help!

When i was in windows 7 x86, I was able to install my video card drivers from deselecting the ' Show compatible hardware ' option in the driver manager. After I clean installed Windows x64,every attempt to install the drivers failed. I managed to install the drivers for my video card and this is what I did to install it. I went to IE and searched for Microsoft catalog.
Good News, I,ve downloaded and now have OS W10. I downloaded W10 and the OS changed to Microsoft Basic Display Adaptor, I then searched for a WDM compatible driver, (Not WDDM).
After the successful installation and restart,you can update to windows 10 x64.

I tried it using DSEO to sign the atikmdag.sy_ file but still no dice. Unless I'm mistaken it should list Display Driver when it tells me what it's going to install right? Second was nyar's guide. I followed all the steps up to choosing an adapter after I pointed it to my extracted driver folder. My X1600 wasn't on the list so I tried a couple at random and when I restarted I found it broke Aero (the Display Window Manager or something like that would crash when it tried to run) and reverting back to the windows update driver fixed it.
I have upgraded from windows 7.1 to windows 10 without any problems. The only thing any driver for x1600 did not work until and i stuck with 1024x768 resolution till I found this driver for V5200. Even powerplay is working:)!
ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 is based on ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 for notebooks as probably the same chip was used. Only the Bios is different and allows the use of professional drivers (for CAD and 3D applications optimized). - for x64 - for x86 Unpack it wit 7-zip and go to device manager -> upgrade driver -> Browse for driver software. -> Let me pick from list of device drivers. -> Have disk -> Browse to where you unpacked package with drivers -> Only click on Open with selecting first inf of listed and next. Thats worked for me and x1600 mobility works far more better than I expected:). I hope that this will help you.
The accelerated videocard (ATI Radeon Mobility X1600) does not work and it seems almost impossible to install the drivers. I have tried almost everything as descibed above. All the time I am facing the error: The selected driver for the device does not support this Windows version. Right click on desktop-> Screen resolution -> Advanced Properties show the following type of videoboard: Video Board Microsoft Basic, and any attempt to update the driver fails. Please, help me on fixing this issue. Otherwise I have lost money and time with W8 and I have to go back to Vista or XP thanks - EDIT - Solved!
I just installed Windows 8 Enterprise Trial version on HP nx9420 laptop (2GHz dual core prosessor, 4gb memory, ATI Motility Radeon X1600 graphics card with 256mb own memory, 1680x1050 native display resolution) on second partition, side by side with existing Windows 7. Installation succeeded perfect, except Windows 8 couldn't install, nor did find from Windows Update display driver for ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics card. Only Microsoft generic display driver was installed and it offered maximum 1450x800 resolution, so not laptops native 1680x1050 screen resolution. Windows 7 can install working ATI driver right from Windows Update for that graphics card (version 8.561.0.0 dated 1.12.2008). Laptop manufacturer HP has latest, old driver for Vista (version 8.453.0.0 dated 22.1.2008), so I installed that, selecting compatibility mode Vista with setup-program in Windows 8. That installed, but seems to have some problems, telling of missing library, maybe with some ATI extra diplay manager software and C++ 2005 library, that it installed.
It's nearly 8 years old! I,ve seen them on E-Bay for £35! 4.00GB Ram is in place but only 3.00GB is usable because I have a 32-bit system. Hope this info helps, Mike.

I actually came across this post early on in my attempts but what I didn't understand the first time through was the importance of the 'First I downloaded via Internet Explorer' part. For those struggling with this like me the emphasis is that you MUST open the OP's links in Internet Explorer or they won't work. When you open them in any other browser the 'Add to basket' that lets you continue & download the package needed does not show up. You can successfully install ATI x1600 mobility on Windows 10;) I have spent some time resolving this problem and managed to install the graphics on nc4830. First I downloaded via Internet Explorer ATI Mobility v5200 driver for windows 7 x64.
MY QUESTION: Is there some problems with Windows 8 and that ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics card? Why isn't the Windows 7 -version of ATI mobility radeon X1600 display driver available in Windows Update for Windows 8 too? So the problem with Windows 8 64-bit installation now is, that it can't install drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon x1600, neither from Win 8 64-bit installation media, nor from Windows Update -service - it just installs generic windows display driver. If one installs older Vista-version drivers for that graphics card, there may be problems that on boot laptop flickers several minutes display and then either gives Windows 8 login screen or just keeps flickering, varying time to time. I know that there is latest legacy driver package at ATI, but that doesn't support Mobility Radeon Xnnn-models, it only supports plain Xnnn-models. If one tries to install with that, it says that graphic card (so mobility radeon -models) isn't supported. So these won't work.
