Marlin Guitar Serial Numbers

But by that time, Marlin's top seller was being tanned by a number of acoustics, Young Chang's Fenix Strat Copy (predictably), Fender's MIJ Special Strat, Fender's American Standard Strat, and of course the then untouchable number one - the Korean Squier Strat.

Marlin Lever Action Rifle Serial Numbers 1883 to 1906. Note that records are chaotic as all models were numbered in a single serial number range. Marlin’s devastatingly popular budget ‘Strat’ won the Making Music Best Guitar of the Year Reader Poll multiple times in the mid to late ‘eighties, as well as netting the Retailers’ Association Award for Excellence over the same period - and all that in addition to topping the sales chart two years running. Since serial numbers weren't introduced until 1898, approximate dating of the earlier guitars can be accomplished by knowing when Martin made changes to their labels or to the brand, which can be found stamped into the back of the head, the upper part of the back, and just inside the soundhole on the long strut which reinforces the back joint.

Pin style bridge. Flat Top Guitar Body Size. Martin flat top guitars were made in various sizes. The bigger the guitar body, the better and more collectible the guitar. This is why guitar body size is so important to identify on a Martin flat top guitar. Starting in October 1930, Martin stamped the guitar body size right above the serial number inside the guitar.

The guitars were marketed by BMS but I am lead to believe were built by Samick. They are heavy for a ply body, but the quality is pretty good for a cheapish guitar. I'm dubious about the £400 tag you mention, I can remember seeing them in a shop for around £100 in the early eighties. BTW: I believe they were only made in the eighties and the style is certainly of that era. I picked one up in excellen condition about 12 years ago for £75. The sound it puts out is pretty top notch too, great pickups, good resonance.

I figure there aren't too many of them out there because nobody even seems to have heard of the brand and I certainly haven't seen any others. I just bought a Marlin off eBay. It's listed as 'Marlin Rock-Metal 24 fret Guitar'. I've searched and the only other guitars made by Marlin that look the same are listed as the same. It's a mockingbird shape with a bridge pickup that looks like an EMG and a neck pickup that is an uncovered humbucker. Anyone who can give me more info?

The Marlin sidewinder was a budget Korean made Strat copy. In 1986 there were two basic variants the K32 and K34 both had plywood bodies but the pickups and hardware varied. The K32 was closest to a strat copy with three single coils (but a rail pickup at the bridge) maple fingerboard and a traditional style tremolo (with optional locking trem). The sidewinder K32 came in traditional strat colours. The sidewinder K34 was the more hard rock style guitar with coil tapped humbucking rail pickup at the bridge plus 2 single coils and 7 metallic finishe options (with body matching headstock). Tremolo options were locking and non locking. Both the K32 and K34 have the Marlin fish inlay at the 12th fret.

Prior to this, 483 guitars of the original 1917 to 1919 series have been documented. • Foden: In 1912 to 1917, Martin made guitars for concert guitarist William Foden. These are similar to the standard Martin models, but have simple soundhole rings and a 20 fret fingerboard (instead of 19). Made in sizes 0 and 00, the styles were similar to Martin's Style 18, 21, 28, and a pearl trim model. Only 27 of these guitars have been documented to date.

Despite the prevalence of the 1988 adverts (the Sidewinder also had its own dedicated ad), the power of Fender’s Korean Squiers proved impossible to overturn at that time, and the Marlin gear slipped down the sales charts. By 1989, British Music Strings had ceased UK distribution of the Marlins, and Hohner had taken over, even branding themselves in, presumably in an attempt to pitch Marlin as a sort of budget superbrand. The ad to the left comes from mid 1989 and shows a completely new range of instruments in which the ‘Strat’ is no longer strictly a Fender copy, and range-wide changes have taken place, including the dropping of the characteristic twelfth fret fish inlay, and drastic revision of the headstock shapes. But even the combined might of the Hohner and Marlin brands was not enough to reassert the success of the guitars in what was now a very different environment. In the Sidewinder’s heyday of 1986, there was nothing comparable to the Marlins in terms of value and image, but by ’89 Korean manufacture had been adopted by more powerful brands, and the likes of – source of the Korean Squiers – were offering with solid wood bodies and considerably higher quality than that associated with Marlin. Additionally, of course, the kind of features which defined the ’88 Marlin range were going rapidly out of fashion by the end of the decade, and Marlin was unable to trade on past glory. Marlin was accordingly reinvented, and the reinvention wasn’t going to grab young musicians’ attention in the way the mid ‘80s models had.

This means that just using the serial number of your Martin will give a very accurate date of when the guitar left the line. The Martin serial number sequence starts at 8348 which is how many guitars the firm had estimated it had produced from its inception to when they started the serial sequence at the end of the 19th century. Martin has kept meticulous records of the serial number of last guitar produced each year, so finding the year of production by serial number is as simple as finding the range it falls into the chart below. Finding the Serial Number on Your Martin In a vast majority of cases, the serial number on a Martin guitar can be found inside the body near the neck joint. This can be seen by looking through the soundhole on the guitar towards the front of the instrument. It can be a little dark in there, so you may need to use a flashlight (or the glow of smartphone) to read each digit.
